Art Competitions - The Stepping Stone To Success

by Kathy Austin

Aspiring artists have a tough time getting their works on display. Entering an art competition is one way that an artist can exhibit his paintings. Even getting a place in a prestigious art competition can be a great boost to his or her self esteem. Many a successful artist has to thank these competition for getting them launched on the highway of success.

Whenever there is a competition, not necessarily one on art, people come to see it. People who may think twice before entering into an art gallery will not hesitate to go to a competition of art to see the work of the artists that have been entered for the competition.

One of the main factors that greatly enhanced the reputation of an art competition is the standing of the Judge who is going to preside over the function. Some competitions have a panel of Judges to grace the occasion. The more well known the Judge or the Jury, the more notable the event. Most of these contests are regular happenings, taking place once or twice a year. Some have an established history and these are the ones that create a center of attention.

Where such a contest is scheduled to be held is very important. If held in a reputed gallery, the prestige of the competition and the prestige of the artists whose works are on exhibit gets greatly enhanced. The nature and value of the prize offered, though relevant, it is the exposure that the artist gets is the chief concern of the budding artist. If held under the glare of the media, the more the exposure.

The popularity or otherwise of a competition depends largely on the location where the competition is scheduled to be held. Rather than having one on a footpath or curb, one held in an art gallery or a museum is bound to draw a larger and more exclusive clientele who are more suggestive and likely to make a purchase. The possibility of a winner, a runner-up or even just an participant gaining further exposure chiefly depends on the status of the competition.

And since art is purely a personal experience, the chances of a work, that did not win a prize, grabbing the attention or fancy of a collector or even a casual spectator and getting sold is quite possible. After the initial exposure at an art competition, a painting once sold becomes talked about and commented on by the friends and acquaintances of the buyer. Throw a stone into a body of water and what do you get? A ripple effect. The same can be said to take place here with respect to art also. It gets more and more talked about and the end result can be just about anything.

Leaving alone the aesthetic part of art competitions, participating and winning an art competition can be highly profitable business. Every year, quite a number of art competitions take place and the prizes offered could well run into five figures or more. For a serious artist, and more so for a budding one, entering his or her works into as many a competition as possible might result in a win and future fame. These contests symbolize an art world and an art market of their own.

The places and the dates of these competitions are readily available on the Internet. For a serious artist, and more so for a budding one, entering his or her works into as many a competition as possible might result in a win and future fame. The possibility of winning some great prizes and making a name for one's own increases with the number of competitions participated. The stepping stone to a gallery of reputation is the art competition.
