Improve Your Website In 5 Steps

by James Youngblood

Achieving the goal of a website requires you follow a few basic rules. Make sure you follow these rules carefully.

1) Do not use splash pages

Splash pages may look nice but they are likely to cause the reader to head for another site before they even find out what you are offering. Busy surfers want information and may move on from the splash page to other straight to the point sites.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements. You will be wasting valuable website real estate and your visitor's time with unwanted banners. Instead, provide more relevant information and integrate your affiliate links into your content. Let your visitors feel they are making make the decision to buy instead of bombarding them with advertising.

3) Your menu system should be easy to use

A simple, straightforward navigation menu system is essential. Avoid complicated flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate your pages, they will leave your site.

4) Let your visitor know where they are

It is easy to get lost on any website unless there are sign posts to guide one along the way. Make sure your guests know which part of your site they are in on every page. Don't let them get lost or confused because confusion means "abandon ship"!

5) Use audio and video on your site carefully

Nothing causes a reader to leave a site more quickly that the unexpected blaring of their speakers when the site first loads. They may not appreciate the same music you do and will express their opinions by leaving immediately. If you use sound or videos, give the reader control over whether it plays or not and some way to adjust the volumne levels.
